Project Description

'Herefordshire in the Great War' was a collaboration between Herefordshire Council's museums, libraries and archive services. The project was funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Herefordshire Council. Its aim was three-fold; improving access to resources that were too fragile to be on public access; commemorating the contribution of people on the home front in Herefordshire and engaging local people with the county's heritage. The Home Front was the main project theme, focusing specifically on agriculture, life at home, munitions as well as going to war. Volunteers digitised items from various collections including newspapers, diaries, letters and images. These are now available on the Herefordshire History website, which was created as one of the project's outputs. Members of the public also contributed information, family stories and objects, which formed part of three exhibition displays in 2014 and 2015. The project additionally delivered a secondary school learning project and a volunteer archaeological project that recorded First World War sites around the county, whilst local history groups likewise contributed research and time towards our endeavours. Over the lifetime of the project (2013-2015) 56 volunteers took part; 207 students engaged with the learning project; c.21,000 people visited our exhibitions, 364 learners took part in events and courses and 12,000 people visited the project's website.
