Project Description

The Hathersage Branch of the Royal British Legion compiled and published two books in commemoration of the First World War. The first, 'When Hathersage Went to War' was principally a record of the village's direct involvement with the conflict - the men who fought, their families at home, and the hospital who nursed the returning wounded. The second book, "The Hathersage Connections" was a detailed record of all the members of the village, or those having connections with it, who had involvement with the Armed and Nursing Services at that time, with details of those who died, along with their place of commemoration. Much research was painstakingly undertaken by Nick Beeley and Legion members, with time given freely by individual researchers. A live searchable website was developed, where details of those involved with the war effort from the Hathersage area is recorded, and this is updated as new information becomes available. Funding for the publications was given by the Hathersage Branch of the Royal British Legion.
The photo shows red poppies in the foreground with the outline of WW1 soldiers marching across a field. Hathersage Parish Church can be seen in the background.
