Project Description

The 'Far, Far from Ypres' Project was created through collaboration between Great War Dundee, Poppyscotland Learning and WW100 Scotland. The Project is a legacy of Ian McCalman’s award-winning multi-media production of the same name. Featuring songs and stories from the Great War it was a rich source of information about the conflict and its impact on Scotland. The 'Far, Far From Ypres' learning resources are intended to build on themes that were covered in the production, as well as those in the SQA National 5 and Higher courses (Historical Study: Scottish) ‘The Era of the Great War, 1900-1928’ and ‘The Impact of the Great War, 1914-18’. Resources are grouped by the four main content areas identified by each course, with learning materials covering key issues. Each content area includes short videos featuring experts discussing essential topics and introducing contested themes, with relevant excerpts from the stage show, and linked source extracts to help students analyse and contextualise historical sources, a specific skill focus of these units. Our project partners were: WW100 Scotland; Poppyscotland; Great War Dundee (Dr Derek Patrick & Dr William Kenefick); Legion Scotland; Ian McCalman and the cast of Far, Far from Ypres. Our funders were Anonymous Trust, Creative Scotland, Dickson Minto, the James Wood Bequest Fund, the Leng Charitable Trust, the Morton Charitable Trust [Dundee], the Robertson Ness Trust, the Tay Charitable Trust, the Barrack Charitable Trust, the Clydesdale Bank, the David and June Gordon Memorial Trust, the D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust, the Maple Trust, the Mary Salmond Trust, the Verden Sykes Trust, the Walter Craig Charitable Trust and the William S Phillips Fund. Key contributions and input towards the project were given by Abertay University; Dr Ann Petrie; Group Captain Bob Kemp; Denise Dunlop; Education Scotland; Greentrax Recordings; Dr Iain Donald; Ian Green; John Anderson; Dr Michael Taylor; The National Library of Scotland; Neil McLennan; Sam Henry; Sarah Moyles; Tea and Type; Trevor Royle; Wav Lab and University of St Andrews.
A still from the show. The professional production was performed in theatres around Scotland in autumn 2018.
