Project Description

This was a photographic record of some of the First World War centenary remembrance events that had links to Keyworth and Bingham in Nottinghamshire. Principal events included the launch of a book by Howard Fisher of 'World War One - Those who died and those who returned', which was published by Keyworth & District Local History Society. The author's research informed the reconstruction of the Memorial Gates in Keyworth, through funding support from the local authority. The Rededication of the Memorial Gates marked the beginning of our events to mark the First World War centenary. Other events included the ringing of a dedicated Commemorative Peal in Bingham and the dedication of a MS & LR railway carriage (946) as a war memorial at Ruddington Heritage Centre. We also participated in a public exhibition which brought together Keyworth & District Royal British Legion and the U3A World War One History Group. Held in November 2018. this was a collection of commemorative displays from invited community groups to mark the end of the First World War centenary, as well as honour individuals from the locality who had fought in other conflicts. Visitors were invited to share their own family histories or stories, whilst we also scanned various personal photographs and documents for the village archive. Keyworth & District Local History Society and the Conservation Area Advisory Group hosted an event titled 'Bringing the Past to Life'. This incorporated a medical collection that is now part of participatory teaching sessions held in local schools. Items from our World War One collection were also exhibited at the weekend of centenary commemorative events organised by Bingham Heritage Trails Association (see separate 'Mapping the Centenary' listing). Our project findings will be retained within the Village Archive. Please see the document below for more information about our project activities.
