Project Description

Our project sought to involve as many residents, of all ages and abilities, of Collingham Parish in commemorating the centenary of the Armistice in November 1918. This project was funded by a Heritage Lottery Grant, a Newark & Sherwood District Council Grant and support from Collingham Parish Council. The project produced a digital and printed record of our local history from 1914 to 1920, telling personal histories of the First World War through our website and displays. Local researchers update our website information as and when it becomes available, with the intention of adding additional material to that produced in 2018. Contributors were able to develop their skills of team-work and research as well as present their findings. The project team organised different types of events, designed to appeal to different interest groups, including voluntary groups within the Parish. All organised by local volunteers, events included lectures, social occasions, work at local primary schools, craft, World War One-themed quizzes, and a special Remembrance Service. By placing local, personal histories within a social, national and international context, the project showed the huge and lasting impacts brought about by the conflict.
