Project Description

As part of this Heritage Lottery funded project, we mounted a display in Castleton's Visitor Centre throughout August 2014. This was based upon research into locals who had gone to war, those that fell, some of whom were decorated; those who stayed at home, and how life continued in the community with memories of those who were children at the time. We marked up a c. 1914 map of the village with local businesses and institutions. The display also provided more general context including enlargements of 'Old Bill' postcards, 3-D displays of wartime artefacts from the Historical Society collection, and Shell Art donated by local residents. Children from Castleton Primary School drew poppies and composed poems as part of the display. The local amateur dramatics group Peveril Players also put on a production of 'Oh What a Lovely War', using some of the research materials as a backdrop for the performance. Having reached a large audience of tourists and families in August 2014, the display was re-exhibited in the summer and autumn of 2018.
