Project Description

In August 2018, Camborne Youth Band took part in the evening commemorative ceremony at the Menin Gate Memorial In Ypres (Belgium). More than 55,000 men with no known grave are honoured at this site. In the band was the great great grandson of a Cornish man who had been based in nearby Estaires (France) during the conflict, and who was able to play his century-old bugle. This event formed part of the 'Heart of Conflict' project, an initiative to uncover previously untold stories about World War On in Cornwall. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Upon the band's return to Cornwall, the project staged an exhibition about the trip at Heartlands, Pool (West Cornwall), with our website containing a pinboard of memories, recordings and documents.
