Project Description

'We Were There Too' is a unique cross community project created to capture, record and preserve the impact, experience and contribution of Britain's Jewish communities during the First World War era. At the centre of the project is a digital archive and interactive website, which will become a permanent record of the lives of Jewish men, women and families, 1905-1920, with details of their military and Home Front activities, ensuring that their stories are not lost for future generations. The project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund in partnership with the Jewish Lads and Girls Brigade, AJEX (the Jewish Military Association), Pears Foundation and Discovery Education. The website is the heart of the project with several different sections. The first, and largest, is that of Personal Records, containing profiles of Jewish men and women and their stories of how they were involved in the war, either overseas on battlefronts or in the UK on the Home Front. There are currently over 2,300 Personal Records on the site, with more being added regularly. The second is History Windows, which give context to some of the main events of the war and how these affected the Jewish community. The Collections section of the site is home to artefacts, photographs and documents from personal collections and institutions - such as IWM and Jewish Military Museum - all digitised for the project. There are also educational resources for use by teachers, as well as facilities to search for details of individuals and a fully digitised and searchable copy of the British Jewry Book of Honour containing the names of some 55,000 British Jews who served in the armed forces, alongside images from the time.

Resources used for research

For the most part, personal stories and memorabilia from family members are uploaded to create Personal Records, with genealogy sites such as Find My Past, Ancestry and Forces War Records used to find any additional information. Many archives have been accessed such as the IWM First World War collections, the Jewish Military Museum collection at the Jewish Museum London, Manchester Central Archives, Liverpool Central Archives and the Manchester Jewish Museum to name a few.
