Project Description
This research formed a collection of 'Communities' housed on the Imperial War Museums-led 'Lives of the First World War' database, an online site in operation over the course of the First World War centenary. The collection focused specifically upon sixty-nine related communities - and the individuals within these - who all came from Rawtenstall, an isolated, small mill town area in East Lancashire. Some individuals with a local connection were known to have emigrated and/or served as part of Dominion Armed Forces of Australia, Canada, Newfoundland, New Zealand and South Africa, as well as several men who returned to join the British Army.

Resources used for research
Information was sourced from original local newspaper accounts, local histories, memorials and contemporary websites. This was duly collated into connected and varied subjects (defined as 'Communities') on the 'Lives of the First World War' platform; ranging from political organisations, schools, churches and sports clubs to accidental deaths, deaths at sea, prisoners, Dominion service, local burials and gallantry awards.
