Project Description

To commemorate the centenary of the First World War, Bedfordshire Archives & Records Service told the story of the people of Bedfordshire during the First World War through two online blogs. 'Bedfordshire At War: News from the Home Front' looked at how the war was experienced across the county, through regular newspaper style reports posted one hundred years to the day after the events they described. Where possible, reports were illustrated by contemporary photographs. Until the summer of 2016 entries were posted daily; for the remainder of the project posting was reduced to two or three entries each week. The blog continued until December 2018 to cover the immediate aftermath of the conflict. All blog posts were researched and written by Bedfordshire Archives staff members. The featured image shows a view of Wardown House Museum and Gallery in Luton taken from the garden at the rear. A black and white photograph of nursing staff and convalescent soldiers taken on the same spot while the house was in use as a hospital during the First World War has been superimposed on the modern colour photograph.
