Project Description

Our project objective was to commemorate local lives lost in the First World War. The project was funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, local and district Councils, and local residents. Ten volunteers from the Alford and District Civic Trust, along with numerous other participants, all helped in various ways by contributing towards the overall project. We produced a First World War-themed community exhibition at Alford Manor House and the Hackett Barn as part of our commemorative effort. Our exhibition won two awards - in 2014 we were highly commended for the best exhibition in the Lincolnshire Heritage Forum, and in 2015, were the winners in the East Midlands Heritage Awards for our 'Heart of the Community'.

Focus and Research

Resources used for research

We sourced information from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission online database and from Lincolnshire Archives. We also conducted local research and secured information passed down through local families. One of our project researchers had an extensive collection of relevant books and genealogical records.
