Project Description
I was invited to lay a wreath on Armistice Day 2018 at Hampton Court Palace, as an act of remembrance in recognition of the sacrifices of 1.3 million men of the Indian Army, on all fronts of the Great War. Our objective was to remember all those who lost their lives including men from the Indian Army, in the form of a two-minute silence and laying a wreath. A two-minute silence was observed at 11:00. Thereafter, five wreaths were laid in order of sequence, as per tradition at Hampton Court. The wreath represented the 'Indian Army 1746-1947' including Sikh, Hindu and Muslim soldiers.
A information leaflet produced acknowledged my great-grandfather, Subadar Major Bawa Singh. His unit, the 23rd Sikh Pioneers regiment, had previously been camped in Home Park, Hampton Court Palace, during the Coronation of King Edward VII in 1902.
