Description
Large, unfinished stone, vaguely triangular in section. Light-coloured metal plaque (possibly stainless steel) affixed to the rectangular front face.
Inscription
ERECTED IN MEMORY OF PILOT/ OFFICER WILLIAM S MCMULLEN/ OF 428 SQUADRON ROYAL/ CANADIAN AIR FORCE WHO ON/ 13TH JANUARY 1945 STAYED AT/THE CONTROLS OF HIS BURNING/ LANCASTER BOMBER KB 793/ UNTILSIX MEMBERS OF HIS CREW HAD PARACHUTED TO/ SAFETY AND THE AIRCRAFT WAS CLEAR OF DENSELY POPULATED/ AREAS OF THE TOWN. HE DIED WHEN IT CRASHED/ ABOUT 600 METRES SOUTH EAST OF THIS PLAQUE AT/ LINGFIELD FARM AND WAS BURIED AT HARROGATE/ WITH OTHERS OF THE RCAF. MCMULLEN ROAD/ WAS NAMED IN TRIBUTE TO HIS COURAGE.
