  • Chester le Street Chronicle and District Advertiser, Friday 21/5/1920 reported: 'WAR SHRINE DEDICATED AT HERRINGTON. Herrington's tribute to the fallen soldiers was manifested on Wednesday evening of last week, when a very large and sympathetic congregation assembled at the parish church of St. Aidan. where a memorial war shrine was dedicated by Canon Bell, of York Minster. The service, conducted by the Revs. W. R. Dawson and A. E Spenser. was of a simple, nature, yet reverent in the extreme, and commenced with the hymn "Jesu our Hope our heart's Desire" followed by an appropriate lesson and prayers. The choir rendered the anthem Blest are the departed" (Spohr). after which the Vicar conducted Canon Bell to the shrine. The rev. gentleman, after offering suitable prayers, dedicated the memorial to " the glory of God." The huge congregation then sang the hymn "They whose course on earth is o'er." Canon Bell preached a most inspiring and effective sermon. taking his text from the 29th and 30th verses of 10th chapter of St. John, and paid tribute to the men of Herrington who made the supreme sacrifice. The hymn "Lights abode celestial Salem," concluded the service. Mr. R. Jeffress presided at the organ. The shrine, which is a beautiful piece of work, is of oak and gilt, and is erected at the side of the chancel. It is of semi-circular form with five panels. The central panel bears the text. " Greater love hath no man than this", and over the words projects the figure of Christ on the Cross. On the first panel in bold letters are the words "In ever glorious memory of the parishioners of Herrington who gave their lives in the great war 1914-1918." The other panels bear the names of 82 men who died for the cause of freedom. At the base of the shrine are scriptural illustrations'. www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0002932/19200521/038/0003
