- Description
- An established grove of mature beech trees within which an abstract statue commemorating the nearby WW1 Knockaloe Internment Camp has been installed as the centrepiece of a garden which simultaneously recognises that the internees came from all over the world, whilst using that fact to illustrate four of the most egregious examples of genocide - one for each corner of the world - of the twentieth century. The sculpture is of bronze, stainless steel, glass, granite, and tile, and evokes the artistic talents of Archibald Knox, the famous local artist who acted as a Censor at the Camp, and the contribution to the world of one of the Internees, Josef Pilates, who developed his renowned fitness regime during his years of internment. Their names are inscribed, along with the names of others associated with the camp, in the granite surrounding the base of the sculpture. The circular base itself, which is topped by a slate ring bearing the name of the person who unveiled the statue, consists of a row of granite setts between coloured tiles made by people from various local communities, which illustrate the fables used in the four genocide gardens. The gardens, represent their respective genocides - the Jewish Holocaust (West), the Ukrainian holodomor (North), the Nanjing Massacre (East), and the Rwandan genocide (South) - through the medium of fables from their regions, with the plants in each garden illustrating its respective fable.
