- In Memory Of Colonel Bonar Millet Deane Second Son Of The Revd George Deane Late Rector Of Bighton Who Fell On The Path Of Duty To His Queen And Country In South Africa Gallantly Leading A Column Of The 58th Regt Under General G Colley At The Battle Of Laings Nek January 28th 1881 Aged 46 Years He Fought A Good Fight He Kept The Faith Jesu Mercy “Labimin in (?) (?) meliara rebertant.” Note:- This was the last occasion on which British troops carried their colours into battle. Four ensigns in succession were shot down carrying the colours of the 1/58th.
