- Inscription
- In/ Loving/ Memory of/ Our dear brother Private Willie Smith/ Who fell in a gallant charge at the Dardanelles/ June 4th 1915 Aged 18 years./ With stricken hearts and weeping eyes,/ We mourn the loss of Willies's life,/ Far away under sunny skies,/ He fell, a hero, in the strife./ Though round him rained both shot and shell,/ He bravely stood against the foe;/ With British blood he fought right well,/ Until he reeled from cruel blow./ Far from home in a soldier's grave,/ Near the Dardanelles he lies,/ Along with gallant comrades brave,/ He rests, but mem'ry never dies./ Could more be done, than thou hast done,/ To sacrifice young life so free?/ By thee, a victor's crown is won/ Brave lad thy country's proud of thee./ J.M.C.
