Description
A lancet-arched sandstone headstone with carved pillar pilasters and floral carving around the inside of the arch, with a fleur-de-lys at the centre. The stone has been broken at the point where the subject's details are inscribed, and the upper section is lying across the lower, preventing sight of most of the inscription. Enough of the details are visible, however, to match with a known casualty commemorated on the Memorial in the Cemetery (WMR 18514), and an image of it intact in 2009 is here: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/12506478/joseph-gaskell#view-photo=20618428
Inscription
Partially visible: Also Pte. Jo... ...ll/ Border Re.../ Remainder hidden - but an image of it, taken in 2009 when the stone was intact:https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/12506478/joseph-gaskell#view-photo=20618428 - reveals that it reads: Pte. Joseph Gaskell/ Border Regt., son of/ James and Mary Ellen Gaskell/ who Fell on Active Service in/ France Oct. 3rd 1917, Aged 23 years./ May his reward be as great as his/ sacrifice.
