- Description
- White marble sarcophagus mounted on a plinth. The figures of a mourning Britannia and a lion are seated on top of the sarcophagus. Carved on the front of the sarcophagus is a relief showing the scene of Major André's execution (see reference). The upper part of the pedimented plinth has a rectangular panel with the first dedication and the lower part is plain with a second dedication. Major André's grave lies in front of the memorial and is marked by an inscribed diagonal stone.

- Upper plinth: SACRED TO THE MEMORY/OF/MAJOR JOHN ANDRÉ,/WHO RAISED BY HIS MERIT AT AN EARLY PERIOD OF LIFE TO THE RANK OF ADJUTANT GENERAL/OF THE BRITISH FORCES IN AMERICA,/AND EMPLOYED IN AN IMPORTANT BUT HAZARDOUS ENTERPRISE/FELL A SACRIFICE TO HIS ZEAL FOR HIS KING AND COUNTRY/ON THE 2ND OF OCTOBER AD 1780/AGED 29,/UNIVERSALLY BELOVED AND ESTEEMED BY THE ARMY IN WHICH HE SERVED/AND LAMENTED EVEN BY HIS/FOES./HIS GRACIOUS SOVEREIGN KING GEORGE THE THIRD/HAS CAUSED THIS MONUMENT/TO BE ERECTED.
