- Tower Road School
- Description
- An interesting, if not unique, war memorial was unveiled at the Tower Road School, Skirbeck, on Friday afternoon last. It took the form of a large framed and illustrated Roll of Honour, containing the names of 32 past scholars and teachers who lost their lives in the late war, and of 158 returned service men similarly associated with the school. Above the words “Roll of Honour”, surmounting the design, appear a cross and crown in a laurel wreath, with the Union Jack and White Ensign floating out on either side. The names are in columns in Old English text, and have boarder of Corinthian pillars and the arms of England with the rose, Scotland with the thistle, Ireland with the Shamrock, and Wales with daffodils, all beautifully painted in water colours. At the foot the words “Victory” and “Peace” appear over the lines, “Not once, or twice, in our fair Island story, The path of duty was the way to glory.” The whole, in its dark frame, makes a very bright and attractive picture. It is the exquisite work of Mr. F. Rose, a retired Leake schoolmaster now residing at Wrangle. And has been subscribed for by the managers, teachers, and children of the school. It is suspended under the clock over the fireplace,
