- Window: TO THE GLORY OF GOD & IN PROUD & LOVING MEMORY OF/ KENNETH WYNDHAM ARBUTHNOT/ MAJOR (..) BATTALION/ SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS/ WHO FELL AT THE BATTLE OF YPRES/ ON THE 25 APRIL 1915./ THIS WINDOW IS ERECTED BY/ HIS WIFE, CHILDREN & BROTHERS & SISTERS. Information Board: The Artist's Conception of the Window/ My thoughts first fixed on psalms 24 and 121 among others,/ with the hills as a symbol of permanence. That I thought,/ was the Spirit of Hope. Then it occurred to me/ that it expressed something surer even than Hope - Confidence./ This called up the image of a kingly singer - a warrior/ who sang of deeds and the confidence begotten of/ them: this knightly figure backed by the age old mount-/ ains, deep blue and purple with the sheltered valley/ beneath. But the figure I saw seemed to have a deeper/ significance than I was able at first to grasp. His/ head was raised upwards against a rainbow arc/ which embraced the landscape in all three lights./ His figure seemed to be an embodiment of passionate/ energy, but there was also some conviction within him/ that made (...) expression of joy. In the rainbow I/ saw vaguely (...) flags, a host of heroes. And then/ I saw the reason for his confidence and joy - the know-/ledge that all worthy human effort and energy is/ conserved; that none of it is aimless or lost; that/ it is all part of one vast constructive purpose; that/ the Now and the Hereafter are one; I don't hope/ ever to get a better interpretation of Hope than/ that offers./ Douglas Strachan/ 15 December 1919
