- Description
- Rectangular brass plaque on an oak backboard. The plaque has a stylised border; at top-centre are a scroll, crown and crossed flags in coloured enamels, beneath which is the inscription, followed by the names of the Fallen (within a black border), followed by the names of those who served. Most of the lettering is black, but some red lettering was included for emphasis.

- The plaque was originally mounted within a substantial nowy-headed oak frame that had the Police crest top-centre, and fluted columns. On an unknown date (possibly when the memorial was moved?), that original frame was removed and replaced with the much simpler version.

- On 23/9/1921 the Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping reported at length on the unveiling of the Sunderland Borough Police memorial that had taken place the previous day, in a corridor near the main entrance to the central Police Building. Before the unveiling, "an impressive service of dedication was conducted in the sessions court upstairs". www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000289/19210923/083/0003

- On 23/9/1921 the Illustrated Chronicle included a photo of the memorial, which was within its original ornate frame. (That frame has since been replaced).
