- A square pedestal surmounted by a pediment with scroll moulding rests on three flights of steps bearing a column . The carved panel has flat fluted pilasters either side of a central panel commemorating the dead of WWI. In turn the column is headed by a seated unicorn bearing a shield. This is a mercat cross.

- From 'The Scotsman - Monday, 8th August 1921, page 6 ROTHES The war memorial erected at Rothes (Morayshire) for the 71 men from- the parish, who fell in the war was unveiled on Saturday in presence of a large crowd. The Countess of Seafield drew aside the Union Jack to disclose the names of the heroes. Provost Gordon addressed the gathering. The memorial is in the form of an Ionic column on a square pedestal with a unicorn on the top. The names are engraved on four granite panels.
