IN MEMORY 1914 - 1919 OF THE MEN OF BIRSE WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR ALSO THOSE DURING 1939 - 1945 / (Names) Interpretation plaque- BIRSE WAR MEMORIAL/The names of thirty four 'Men of Birse' are on the/parish 'War Memorial'. Twenty six of them died in the First World warm half of whom were aged 25 or/under and a third of whom have no known grave as/their bodies were never recovered./The Memorial was built of local stone in 1921 to/a deign by William Kelly ARAS. It was paid for by/local subscription and dedicated on 4th December /1921 in a ceremony attended by around 300 local/people. It was rededicated on 22nd October 1946/after the names had been added of the 8 men of/Birse who died during the Second World War
