/In memory of/Private Wilfred Wood VC/10th Battalion The Northumberland Fusiliers/(2nd February 1897 - 3rd January 1982) /Wilf Wood was born in Stockport, and worked locally for the London &/North Western Railway as a shed cleaner. He enlisted into the Cheshire/Regiment in late 1916, but was transferred to The Northumberland Fusiliers./He saw action in Italy where, on 28th October 1918 near Casa Vana, his unit/was held up by machine-gun fire and snipers. On his own initiative, armed/with a Lewis gun, he enfiladed the machine-gun nest causing 140 of the/enemy to surrender. The advance continued until another machine-gun/opened fire at point-blank range, upon which Private Wood charged without/hesitation, killing the gun crew, and continuing to enfilade a ditch from/which three officers and 160 men surrendered./ /For his conspicuous valour and initiative in the face of intense gun fire,/he was awarded the Victoria Cross./ /Returning to the railway after the war, he became a fireman and later a driver/and, in 1922, a L&NWR 'Claughton' locomotive was named after him./
