- Simple rectangular wooden board flanked by columns on either side, each with a carved laurel wreath in relief. The inscription is in gilded lettering.

- This Tablet was erected by the members of the/ BARNSTAPLE VOLUNTEER TRAINING CORPS/ to commemorate the loyal services of/ RICHARD DENNY/ Lieutenant-Colonel, Royal Marine Light Infantry,/ and Commandant of the Corps/ Which, on the request of the Mayor of this Borough,/ he enrolled and trained in the Winter of 1914 during/ the Great War./ Always genial and considerate, frank and unassuming, he was also a fine soldier and/ possessed the devoted loyalty of his men./ He died July 6th 1915/ Aged 66 years/ DEEPLY REGRETTED BY ALL WHO KNEW HIM
