Description
The names of the 280 men of Newton-in-Makerfield who fell in the Great War are displayed on a small Royal British Legion wooden cross, with the date of their death. These are mounted in date-of-death order on a series of 21 boards ranged around three walls of the chapel in Newton-le-Willows (Wargrave) Cemetery. Where available photographs are displayed alongside the cross. A board at the end of the display carries details of the deaths of some of the men. In September 2019, to commemorate the beginning of WW2, the exhibition was extended along the East wall of the chapel by the addition of a similar display for those killed in that conflict. Included in the additional panels are details of the town's WW1 VC, and information about the CWGC graves in the cemetery.
