- Description
- At the centrepiece of the Garden is the War Memorial incorporating the 'Unknown Soldier' created by sculptor Tom Maley in 2001- turned through 90 degrees and placed on a new pedestal of brick with shallow coping set on two low square steps which in turn sit on a raised circular platform. The plaques bearing the names are set in shallow alcoves. A new Memorial recognising conflicts after 1945 is also centrally located next to the War Memorial. Round the edge are 6 seats, each bearing a dedication- two are not memorials due to their wording- the others are our references 88338 to 88341. Also there are display boards giving information on various themes- Ashington at War, Digging for Victory, The Bevin Boys, The Battle Goes On-Conflicts since the 2nd World War, Remembrance, The Boer War, Hugh Cairns VC DCM. Groups of trees have been planted around the gardens
