Description
Pedimented white marble tablet with black inscribed lettering, on a black marble backboard
Inscription
SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF VICE ADML SIR GEORGE EYRE, K.C.B. & G.C.M.G. WHO WAS BORN AT GROVE, APRIL 23, 1769, AND DIED AT THE RECTORY OF CARLTON, IN LINDRICK, FEB. 15, 1839. ENDOWED BY NATURE WITH A SUPERIOR INTELLECT, A CLEAR AND SOUND JUDGMENT, THE MILDEST AND MOST AFFECTIONATE DISPOSITION, AND A CALM YET FIRM TEMPER, HIS VARIED AND ON MANY OCCASIONS, DISTINGUISHED SERVICE OF HIS COUNTRY FOR MORE THAN HALF A CENTURY, WAS INVARIABLY ATTENDED BY THE WARM ATTACHMENT AND CORDIAL RESPECT OF THOSE WITH WHOM HE WAS ASSOCIATED. IN PRIVATE LIFE IT MAY TRULY BE SAID THAT THOSE WHO KNEW HIM THE BEST, LOVED AND RESPECTED HIM THE MOST. TO HIS DEVOTEDLY ATTACHED FAMILY, HE WAS FOR MANY YEARS THE SOURCE OF AS A GREAT AND PURE DOMESTIC HAPPINESS AS IT IS POSSIBLE IN THIS WORLD TO ATTAIN. GRATEFUL FOR THE PROLONGED PERIOD DURING WHICH HE WAS SPARED TO THEM, AND IN HUMBLE BUT EARNEST HOPES, THROUGH THE MERITS OF OUR BLESSED REDEEMER, OF A REUNION WHERE PARTING AND GRIEF ARE ALIKE UNKNOWN, HIS SORROWING WIDOW AND CHILDREN HAVE ERECTED THIS MONUMENT. “IF WE BELIEVE THAT JESUS DIED AND ROSE AGAIN, EVEN SO THEM ALSO WHICH SLEEP IN JESUS WILL GOD BRING WITH HIM” ALSO OF GEORGIANA, RELICT OF THE ABOVE, DAUGHTER OF SIR GEORGE COOKE, BART OF WHEATLEY, CO YORK, WHO DIED AND WAS INTERRED AT BOSTON SPA THORP ARCH, DEC. 4. 1862, AGED 83.
