Description
Oak tree grown from an oak collected in 2007 from near the Thiepval Memorial on the Somme, with an accompanying plaque mounted on a low steel stand. The plaque was originally in machine-cut brass, but this has been replaced at some time by an incised wooden plaque behind a perspex sheet.
Inscription
This French Oak was planted on the 25th February 2011 / by former Inverness Baillie John Stewart MacLennan, / with assistance from his son Niall and grandson / Fionniagh MacGill-Fhinnein along with Provost / Jimmy Gray, City of Inverness. The acorn from which / the tree has grown was collected from the / Thiepval Memorial in France, by his son Roddie / in October 2007. It is planted in memory of Mr MacLennan's grandfather / John, who was killed at the Battle of Arras in 1917; / and to celebrate the endurance of Highland people / during times of adversity, across the centuries. Mairidh cuimhne air euchdnan treun / The deeds of the brave shall be remembered.
