- Description
- A three-sectioned granite wall with a commemoration engraved in gold lettering across the three sections. Polished black granite tablets on the left and right flanks, which curve inwards, bear the gold-lettered names of the 456 service personnel who died, or died subsequently as a result of injuries sustained, in Afghanistan. Affixed to the reverse of the centre-section of the wall is a map (possibly of polished black granite) illustrating British bases, each denoted with a stone from that region. The memorial is a close replica of the memorial which stood originally at Camp Bastion. In front of the wall is a pyramid-shaped granite cairn on a three-stepped platform on which the original memorial cross from Camp Bastion is fixed, the cross made of brass shell casings. The original brass plaques from the Camp Bastion memorial have been placed inside the new memorial. The wall and cairn sit on a large paved area. A curved line of weeping willows on the edge of the Darbyshire Ditch connect the bastion Wall site to the Basra Wall memorial.
