When originally erected, the marble tablet had no frame, and was fixed to the wall beneath a Gloucestershire Regiment shield. The marble tablet was subsequently placed within a wooden frame, and now hangs beneath the WW1/WW2 memorial re Bedfordshire Constabulary.

  • On 30/3/1951 the Bedfordshire Times reported: General Douglas MacArthur has sent a personally-signed letter of condolence to Mr. Ernest Simcox, of 76 Westbourne Road. Bedford, whose officer son, Douglas Simcox, killed on active service in Korea, was known to the General at his United Nations Command Headquarters. “The untimely and tragic loss your son, Douglas, has shocked us all deeply”, wrote the General.   • Bedfordshire Times and Independent 23/2/1951 (page 5) reported: 'O.B.M. KILLED IN KOREA. Athlete, Boxer, and Former Constable. An O.B.M. and former member of "B" Division of Bedfordshire County Police, Lieut. Douglas Arthur Simcox, of Westbourne Road, Bedford, was killed in action in Korea on 16th February. On the Army Reserve of Officers he was transferred to the Bedfs. and Herts. Regiment Reserve and recalled on 1st September 1950. Aged 23. Lieut. Simcox had had a varied military career. At Bedford Modern School, which he left in 1945, he was School captain of boxing, a notable gymnast and athlete, and a sergeant in the J.T.C. Subsequently he was commissioned in the 5th Gurkha Rifles, later transferring to the Royal Artillery. Released in 1948, he joined the County Constabulary in February, 1949, being stationed in Bedford. After his recall in September, Lieut. Simcox was sent to Kure, Japan, from whence, later, he joined the 1st Gloucestershire Regiment in Korea. For a time he was serving with the “Diehards" (1st Middlesex Regiment), but was transferred back to the Gloucestershires on 6th February. The parents of Lieut.
