Warspite under the command of / Captain Edward Montgomery Phillpotts Royal Navy / returned to port after the battle of Jutland 31st May 1916. / This ensign flown at her masthead was deposited in this / Church of S. Mary the Virgin on the first anniversary / of the battle, a memorial of gratitude to Almighty God / for the preservation of the ship from the dangers of the / sea and the violence of the enemy. “Then are they / glad because they are at rest, and so He bringeth / them unto the haven where they would be,” /
