Description
Large brick building with a concrete facade, coloured to resemble stonework, with detailing coloured sandstone yellow, including an impressive open porch supported by Doric columns spanning the pavement. In the apex of the porch is a nowy-headed sandstone plaque, at the top of which is a carving of an eternal flame piercing a laurel wreath, which is set above a roundel bearing the town seal, with the dates of the conflict carved to each side, and the inscription Tiverton Memorial incised upon a scroll. Along a band of grey-coloured concrete to the left of the porch are incised the names of three ladies who laid foundation stones on May 30th 1928, whilst between windows above there is a slate plate incised with partial details of the function and history of the building. There is also a VC tablet (WMR 97699) between the porch and the above slate tablet. A sandstone arch, again on Doric columns, leads to the extensive rear of the building, at the end of which is a caretaker's accommodation, with a cast metal plate entitled 'Memorial Cottage' at the entrance to its yard. This building was constructed on the site of the former Angel Hotel, within which the scheme to create a Library as the town's War Memorial was inaugurated in April 1919, with the Library opening in November 1920. An appeal was launched for a new building and the hotel was demolished early in 1928, with the foundation stones for the new building being laid in May, and it was completed in 1929. Signs over the side arches to the porch signify that the building is presently used as the Headquarters of the Tiverton Branch of the Royal British Legion.
