- IN MEMORY OF/LIEUT-GENERAL THE HON SIR WILLIAM STEWART/2ND SON OF JOHN, EARL OF GALLOWAY /KGCB AND KTS/COL OF THE 1ST BATN. RIFLE BRIGADE/HE WAS BORN ON THE 10TH JANUARY 1773 AND DIED ON THE 7TH JANUARY 1827 AT CUMLODEN/FROM 1792 TO THE CLOSE OF THE WAR IN 1814 HE WAS ACTIVELY ENGAGED/IN THE SERVICE OF HIS COUNTRY DURING SEVENTEEN FOREIGN CAMPAIGNS/IN THE WEST INDIES, IN EGYPT AND IN VARIOUS PARTS OF EUROPE./IN ITALY HE SERVED WITH THE ALLIED ARMIES UNDER SUWARROWAND OTHERS. AT FEROL HE WAS SEVERLEYY WOUNDED/AT COPENHAGEN HE COMMANDED THE TROOPS EMBARKED WITH LORD NELSON,/AT WALCHEREN THE LIGHT BRIGADE AND IN SPAIN AND PORTUGAL/THE 2ND DIVISION OF THE ARMY UNDER THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON/IN EIGHT GENERAL ACTIONS/HE REPRESENTED THE COUNTY OF WIGTOWN IN THREE PARLIAMENTS/AND RECEIVED IN HIS PLACE THE THANKS OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS/FOR THE ABLE AND GALLANT SERVICE HE HAD RENDERED TO HIS COUNTRY/HIS HEALTH BEING GREATLY IMPAIRED/BY ARDUOUS DUTY AND NUMEROUS WOUNDS HE SPENT THE/LATER YEARS OF HIS LIFE IN RETIREMENT, WHEN HIS/UNAFFECTED PIETY, BENEVOLENCE AND RESIGNATION PROVED/HIM TO BE A SINCERE CHRISTIAN/HE DIED AT A PREMATURE AGE/A VICTIM TO HIS ZEAL FOR THE PUBLIC SERVICE/HONOURED AND ADMIRED BY HIS COUNTRY/BELOVED AND LAMENTED BY HIS FRIENDS
