Inscription
IN MEMORIUM/He whom this scroll commemorates was numbered among those who at the call of King and Country left all that was dear to them, endured hardness, faced danger and finally passed out of the sight of men by the path of duty and self-sacrifice giving of their own lives in freedom. Let those who come after see to it that his name is not forgotten/2/Lieut. John Granville Berry M.C. West Yorkshire Regiment age 20. Youngest Son of W.N. and E.A. Berry of Hawthorn House, Earby. Reported missing in the Great War at the battle East of Ypres on August 16th 1917./He was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at the battle at Westhoek on the 31st July and 1st August 1917./His dust is now lying in an unfamiliar land (England he went for you)/O, England sometimes think of him, of thousands only one as once he thought of you.
