Description
It takes the form of a mural monument of Sicilian Marble and Bronze. Four square pilasters support triple arches above, forming the framework for three recessed panels all resting upon a broad parallel pedestal. The whole stands out from a flat background or frame also of marble. The three panels are of bronze and on them are inscribed the ranks, names and regiments of the fallen.
Inscription
Along the top of the broad marble panel of the pedestal is an inscription in Greek from Pindar, the literal translation of which is- “Both over land and across the sea afar does their name fly: it leaps even to the Ethiopians” Immediately beneath this is the main inscription, formed boldly of bronze letters and which reads “IN GRATEFUL HOMAGE TO THE MASTERS AND PUPILS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR” and along the foot, these lines of Milton are given “Nothing is here for tears, nothing to wail Or knock the breast And what may quiet us in a death so noble” On the base, the date is inscribed in Roman numerals MCMXIV – MCMXIX
