Description
Book of Remembrance 16 inches high x 12 inches wide x 1½ inches thick. It is bound in red leather, with a gilded border, and the words “Roll of Honour” all tooled in gold. At the front is a Dedication Prayer, hand printed, each line set between two parallel red lines with the lettering in capitals spanning the gap between. On the next page is a monogram of the initials "C.P.S.” Then comes the title page with the title at the top, the words “Roll of Honour” set over a laurel wreath, and the place name underneath. The whole book has been written and decorated by hand. Names of the fallen are inscribed three to a page in illuminated manuscript with family and service details in plain capital script. Each page has a triple line border. The names are larger with elaborate initials with gold outline, again in capitals set between parallel lines. In some cases, possibly as information arrived after the main manuscript was written, additional information is set out on the blank left-hand page (the back of the previous page) opposite the entry for the person concerned. In completing the transcription these additional items are shown with the entry for the individual but preceded, as they are in the book, by an asterisk. At the end of this section, the words “They died that we might live” and the dates have been set on an elaborate painted scroll. The names of those who served - men and women - are four to a page. The initials again are elaborate but are in red, and also with gilding. It is in a glass-topped case which appears to be fixed to a simple table. There is a brass flower vase side on each side.
