- Description
- The surviving element of the composite memorial is a square clock that projects from the second floor of the Peterborough & District Co-operative Society's former premises at Westgate House. The clock has black Roman numerals against a white background. It was originally combined with a marble tablet, which was fixed to the wall beneath it at 1st floor level, to form the Society's World War 1 memorial. The marble tablet, which has since been lost, was ornately carved, with the Society's badge above fluted columns flanking a laurel wreath above the inscription. The tablet was supported by two carved scrolled brackets, the fixings for which can still be seen on the brickwork of the building, beneath the clock. (The same casualties were later included on a joint WW1 and WW2 plaque commissioned by the Peterborough & District Co-operative Society - see WMR reference 333).
