Description
Memorial to the crews of the three Isle of Man Steam Packet Company vessels lost at Dunkirk on 29th May 1940. The Memorial began with the siting of the anchor of TSS Mona's Queen III in 2012, along with a related tablet, and individual tablets to those killed in her sinking. On the next Anniversary of the sinkings, in 2013, two more tablets, for TSS King Orry and TSS Fenella, were positioned at each end of the commemoration wall, and three interpretative panels were positioned alongside the approach path from the road. The anchor is set, with its stock raised on a triangular stone pillar, on top of a circular stone base embedded with cobbles surrounded by a circular pavement of stone setts. The foundation stone depicts a compass with a compass needle and navigation points. The anchor is lined up on a heading pointing seawards towards Dunkirk. On the landward side there is a castellated, curved grey stone wall, at the centre of which a domed stone tablet is embedded in its inner side, carrying the Dedication relating to TSS Mona's Queen III. This is flanked by twenty-four individual tablets, each inscribed with the name, rank, and place of origin. On the outer edges are set the rectangular stone tablets relating to, on the left, TSS King Orry, and, on the right, TSS Fenella. They are inscribed with the name, rank, and place of origin of each of those killed in their sinkings. In front of this wall are four benches made of stone and marble.
