Description
Free standing pillar set on an integral plinth with a two-stepped base. The whole is surrounded by railings with posts at each corner. On all Faces of the shaft the badge of the Merchant Navy Association is incised and embellished with gold. Plimsoll line markers are incised and in black on faces 1 and 4 of the plinth. The inscription is on face 2 of the plinth and repeated on face 4 , both are incised and picked out in black.

Plinth Faces 2 and 4: THEIR NAMES ARE NOT INSCRIBED ABOVE/ A BED OF COMMON CLAY,/ BUT IN THE SCROLLS OF ROLLING WAVES AND/ WREATHS OF SWIRLING SPRAY./ THEIR EPITAPHS ARE WRITTEN IN THE/ LANGUAGE OF THE SEA./ ON ALL THE OCEANS WHITE CAPS FLOW,/ YOU DO NOT SEE CROSSES ROW ON ROW,/ BUT THOSE WHO SLEEP BENEATH THE SEA,/ REST IN PEACE FOR YOUR COUNTRY IS FREE./ DEDICATED TO THE MERCHANT NAVY BY THE/ MERCHANT NAVY ASSOCIATION HARWICH/ 3rd SEPTEMBER 2006
