- Description
- Mottled grey pyramid in relief supported on three balls on a plinth. A foul anchor carved on the plinth. A black back plate with the arms of Finnis below the plinth.
- Inscription
- To the memory of / Captain ROBERT FINNIS, / a Native of this Town and Port, / who was killed in / the service of his Country, / on board his Majesty’s Sloop of war / Queen Charlotte, / which he commanded / on Lake ERIE, Upper CANADA, / in an engagement/ with an American Squadron, / of very superior force, / under Commodore PERRY, / the 10th day of September 1813, / aged 29 years. / When a Midshipman of the Beaulieu Frigate, / he commanded one of the Boats, / employed in cutting out the / French Corvette La Chevrette, / from Camaret Bay, / on the night of the 21st of July 1801; / and was made Lieutenant, / for his gallant conduct on that occasion. / After sixteen years / actively employed in the Royal Navy, / he thus fell in the prime of life, / regretted and lamented. / An irreparable loss / to his afflicted Family and Friends. //
