Description
Plinth comprised of three rough-hewn stones surmounted by bronze figure of Col Sir Stirling in uniform with officers coat and cap. Figure faces north and carries binoculars with leather strap in outstretched left hand. (the binoculars and leather strap were missing by May 2009, but were there in 2007) Three plaques mounted on stones beneath figure. Plaque with name in raised lettering surrounded by raised border. Plaque with SAS dedication in raised lettering flanked by emblem in relief and surrounded by raised border. Plaque with SAS regimental history with single lined border and regimental emblem depicted in upper centre. Whole set in paved circular enclosure with low stone wall. The names of 317 members of the SAS killed in WWII, on 32 plaques on the ground around the statue (also two with the SAS badge and six blank plaques). Also a memorial to the LRDG on the same site (separate record)
