Description
Proforma Roll of Honour in a glazed oak frame. At top-centre a shield (bearing a red Latin cross on a white background) is flanked by a ribbon containing the phrase "“HIS FAITHFULNESS AND TRUTH/ SHALL BE THY SHIELD AND BUCKLER” (a quote from Psalm 91, line 4). Of the proforma's three pre-printed columns, two have a piece of paper attached, bearing the handwritten names of parishioners: the left column lists those who were serving in WW1; the central column lists those who were serving in WW2.

History
During WW1 a Roll of Honour was compiled of parishioners who were on active service. (In June 1916 the Roll was reported as having been on display at the recent village fete, at which time it listed 18 parishioners; further names had evidently been added by the end of that War). Either during or shortly after 1918, the handwritten details of those WW1 enlistees were evidently affixed to the left column of the pre-printed Roll of Honour* form. On an unknown subsequent date in WW2, a similar hand-written list of parishioners who were on active service in that War was compiled, and affixed to the central column of the original WW1 Roll. On 19/6/2011 the combined WW1/WW2 Roll was on display in the Chapel. As that memorial had become faded and difficult to read, a new WW1/WW2 Roll of Honour was created c2014 (our record of which is WMR 104099). It was erected in place of the original memorial, which was stored away in the Chapel. [*The identical pre-printed proforma used for Dyke's original Roll of Honour was used in other Chapels elsewhere in the UK, e.g. at the Easington Lane Methodist Church in Durham, our ref 71109].

  • Lincolnshire Echo 8/6/1916, page 2: report of the village's recent fete, which included mention of the Roll of Honour: 'RED CROSS FETE.—The village of Dyke was en fete on Wednesday, when, by kind permission of Mr. G. A. M. Holland, the grounds of Dyke House were thrown open on behalf of Red Cross funds. The arrangements were carried out by a Committee, of which Mr. Holland was Chairman. The opening ceremony was performed by Dr. Gilpin, Commandant of the R.V.A.D. Red Cross Hospital at Bourne, who referred to the national calamity that had befallen the country by the loss of Lord Kitchener. Numerous attractions were provided, and these created a great deal of amusement and enjoyment. Prominently displayed in the grounds was a roll of honour containing the names of 18 Dyke men who have volunteered for service...' www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000332/19160608/079/0002
