Description
Southern Railway 4-6-2 Light Pacific locomotive, with two rectangular brass nameplates with raised letters on a pale sky-blue background, each with the wording BATTLE OF BRITAIN CLASS in smaller lettering at the base. Each locomotive had two vitreous enamelled oval badges on a air force blue background within a gunmetal surround with the appropriate squadron crest or the badge of the Royal Air Force, where no specific crest was available. As originally built the locomotives had air-smoothed casings and the nameplate was applied above the badge, but when rebuilt without the casings the badge was placed above the nameplate mounted on the running plate.
