Description
A nowy-headed brass plaque on a wooden backboard. Wyvern crest of the Midland Railway Co on a roundel at the head over a decorative border. Inscription incised in upright capital lettering.

History
November 2013: The memorial was installed on Platform 1 of the Midland Station. November 2012: Hartley House was to be sold and the memorial was removed for secure storage pending the identification of a permanent site. 2011-2012: Attempts to have Hartley House listed were unsuccessful. 2011: Scientifics Ltd moved elsewhere and Hartley House became vacant. 1994-1997: British Railways was privatised and the Scientific Section became Scientifics Ltd. 1 January 1948: London Midland and Scottish Railways became part of the nationalised British Railways. December 1935: Hartley House was opened as the London Midland and Scottish Railway's Scientific Research Laboratory and the memorial is presumed to have been relocated there at about that time. 1 January 1923: The Midland Railway became part of the London Midland and Scottish Railway. c1922: The memorial is believed to have been installed in the Midland Railway Chemical Laboratory. The original laboratory was on the main site, just to the northwest of the roundhouse but it is believed that a newer laboratory was later built on Calvert Street. It has not yet been established which of these housed the memorial.
