- Description
- Marble free-standing monument with a life-size statue of a man on a tall circular fluted column, three allegorical figures below. The statue represents a man with rolled hair, wearing a garter robes and long cloak and holding a scroll in his right hand. Below left is a seated woman (Britannia) with plumed helmet and spear, to the centre right a standing semi-naked native woman her hands clasped together gathering up her robe; to the far right is a seated powerfully-built bearded man, his hair coiled up on top of his head, holding a wreath, a figurine of an Indian god is fixed to a pot beside him. The whole stands on a shaped podium bearing the memorial inscription above a rectangular base.

- TO THE MEMORY OF / CHARLES MARQUIS CORNWALLIS, / GOVERNOR GENERAL OF BENGAL, / WHO DIED 5TH.OCTOBER 1805, AGED 66 AT GHAZEEPORE IN THE PROVINCE OF BENARES, / IN HIS PROGRESS TO ASSUME THE COMMAND OF THE ARMY IN THE FIELD. / THIS MONUMENT / IS ERECTED AT THE PUBLIC EXPENCE / IN TESTIMONY OF HIS HIGH AND DISTINGUISHED PUBLIC CHARACTER, / HIS LONG AND EMINENT SERVICES BOTH AS A SOLDIER AND A STATESMAN, / AND THE UNWEARIED ZEAL WITH WHICH HIS EXERTIONS WERE EMPLOYED / IN THE LAST MOMENT OF HIS LIFE / TO PROMOTE THE INTEREST AND HONOR OF HIS COUNTRY.
