Description
An ornate stone and metal monument comprising a stone obelisk with spray of leaves and royal cypher (VR) in relief at the head, cast metal cables on each arris, an elaborate trophy of flags at the top and inscription inlaid in upright capital block lettering. A pedestal has a cornice at the top and hollowed faces, each bearing a cast metal lion face. A rough hewn plinth has a chamfered top and polished arrises and a square ashlar base has bevelled upper edges. Four additional small plinths, one at each corner, bear stacks of cannon balls. Commemorates Chelsea Pensions buried here between January 1855 and July 1893, after that dates internments took place at Woking. The trophies were cast from parts of guns used in the Crimean War.
