Description
Informally planted walled garden, the main feature of which is a modern sculture constructed of a resin material finished in a brown paint and mounted on a small square block of sandstone and placed in the centre on a brick paved area, behind which runs a semi circular path and three bench seating. A main plaque is positioned on the ground before the sculpture and is repeated, together with three further plaques, in the adjacent flower beds.
Inscription
Main and secondary plaques: The Refugee, by Naomi Blake./ This sculpture was created by Naomi Blake, a/ survivor of Auschwitz in memory of the 6,000,000/ Jews murdered by the Nazis because of who they were./ Among them 1,500,000 children who never could share/ their gift of life with the world. Second plaque: We remind ourselves that the duty to uphold the/ values of humanity are shared equally by everyone./ Looking back, we look forward to make a world/ free of intolerance and pain. Third Plaque: We live in a world which we might despair./ A world wherein the words 'Peace', 'Justice',/ 'Love', 'Care', 'Compassion', 'Tolerance',/ 'Understanding', 'Trust', and 'Friendship' are/ in the vocabulary of all, but not in the/ experience of enough people. Fourth plaque: This garden is dedicated to millions of victims/ of oppression, torture, mass death and genocide./ We mourn their loss as our loss and that of humanity.
