- Inscription
- Upper Tablet-ROYAL AIR/ FORCE/ (Names) Lower Tablet- HERE ARE COMMEMORATED/ THE CREW OF AN AIRCRAFT/ CRASHED ON BEN MORE/ ON THE 13TH APRIL 1941/ WHOSE BODIES/ LIE WHERE THEY FELL Information Board-WAR MEMORIAL/In early April 1942, an RAF Anson bomber crashed 2,300/feet (700 metres) above sea level on Ben More Assynt,/near Inchnadamph. Despit an extensive search, it/was six weeks before the snow line receded and a/shepherd found the wrecked plane and bodies of/the six-man crew. The passage of time and remoteness/of the site meant that the airmen were buried at the scene, the only site/in Scotland where this occurred. A cairn protects the hillside grave, but a more accessible memorial was erected at the churchyard gate, the trough below it containing soil from the burial site.
